Writing Better

How to become a better writer

Writing may be art, but you don’t have to be an artist to be a decent writer. All you need is some basic respect for the rules of the language.
Tip #1
Grammarly can help you a lot, but it is not a replacement for solid human knowledge and the application of grammar — at least not yet.
Grammarly does not recognize many errors, which is why relying entirely on the application to edit your documents is foolish.
Grammarly (the free version) did not pick out obvious errors in the two real-life examples here.
Sample#1
It’s generally possible to choose between two types of service specialists and generalists. The best option when it comes to plumbing in Richmond; is the expertise of a superior locksmith, since the depth of technical knowledge required is usually what makes the difference.

Solution #1

It’s generally possible to choose between two types of service providers: specialists and generalists. The best option, when it comes to plumbing in Richmond, is to choose a service provider who is a superior locksmith. The depth of technical knowledge required is usually what makes the difference.

Rationale: As it reads above, the reader gets confused because the sentences are long.

Adding providers here because specialists and generalists are service providers and not services.

A comma is needed here to separate the phrase “when it comes to plumbing in Richmond” as it is an additional detail. See that there is a comma at the end of it as well.

Need to break the sentences so that the reader can understand in smaller bits what the writer is saying.

Sample #2:
When going through this process, pay attention to the professional’s friendly attitude, critical thinking skills, knowledge level, and critical thinking skills.

Solution #2:

When going through this process, pay attention to the professional’s friendly attitude, critical thinking skills, and knowledge level.

Rationale: “critical thinking skills” is repeated. Grammarly didn't pick it up.
